Ontario summers are getting hotter — and the last thing you want is your AC failing on a 35°C day in July. Knowing when to replace your air conditioner before it dies can save you from emergency costs and uncomfortable weeks waiting for parts.

Sign #1: Your AC Is Over 10-12 Years Old

Most central air conditioners last 12–15 years with proper maintenance. If yours is approaching or past this age, start planning for replacement — even if it’s technically still running. Efficiency degrades significantly after the 10-year mark.

Sign #2: Refrigerant Leaks (R-22 / Freon)

If your AC uses R-22 refrigerant (common in units made before 2010), replacing it has become extremely expensive — R-22 is being phased out and costs hundreds of dollars per pound. A refrigerant leak in an R-22 system almost always means it’s time to replace.

Sign #3: Increasingly Expensive Repairs

Apply the same 50% rule as furnaces: if repairs cost more than half the price of a new system, replace it. A new central AC starts at $3,799 installed — so repairs over $1,800 on an aging unit rarely make sense.

Sign #4: Rising Electricity Bills

Older AC units operate at SEER ratings of 8–10. Modern units hit SEER 18–24. Replacing a 10 SEER unit with an 18 SEER unit can cut your cooling costs by up to 45%.

Sign #5: Poor Cooling Performance

If your AC runs constantly but can’t keep up on hot days, or some rooms are always warmer than others, your system has likely lost significant capacity. This won’t improve with repair — it’s a sign of systemic decline.

Sign #6: Strange Noises or Smells

Grinding, banging, or squealing noises indicate failing mechanical components. Musty or burning smells can indicate mould in the system or electrical problems. Both are serious warning signs.

Sign #7: Frequent Breakdowns

If your AC has needed repairs two or more times in the past three years, it’s entering a cycle of increasing failures. Budget that repair money toward a new system instead.
